What size lamp you need
Lamp proportion follows two rules that hold in almost every room. For a table lamp, the bottom of the shade should sit at roughly eye level when you are seated, which is about 38 to 42 inches from the floor. On a standard 25-inch end table, that means a lamp somewhere around 26 to 34 inches tall. Too tall and you look straight at the bulb; too short and the light pools on the table instead of across the room.
For a bedside lamp, the bottom of the shade should sit at about shoulder height when you are sitting up in bed, roughly 24 to 27 inches above the top of the nightstand. For the shade, aim for a height roughly two-thirds the height of the base, and a width always wider than the widest point of the base. Standard reading floor lamps run 58 to 64 inches; arc floor lamps reach 70 inches or more and extend over a sofa when there is no room for an end table.
Choosing the right bulb
The lamp sets the style, and the bulb sets how the room actually feels. Keep wood out of direct sun

Dust along the grain, not across it
Use a dry or barely damp cloth. Silicone-heavy spray polishes build up over time and complicate any future refinishing, so save them for furniture you are certain will never be refinished.
Move furniture properly the first time
Most furniture damage happens in the ten minutes it takes to move a piece. Empty the drawers, remove glass and shelves, lift rather than drag, use sliders on hard floors, and wrap the corners with a moving blanket before the piece leaves the room. Door frames take more finish off furniture than anything else in a house.
How do you fix a scratch in wood furniture?
Start by working out how deep it is. Run a fingernail across the scratch: if it catches, the damage has gone through the finish; if it doesn't, it is a surface scuff. Test whatever you use on a hidden area first, such as the underside of a tabletop or the back of a leg, because finishes vary more than product labels suggest.
For surface scuffs, clean the area and work in a furniture polish or wax. Many light scratches disappear once you feed the finish. For scratches that have gone through the finish, use a wood touch-up marker or fill stick matched to the color, let it set, then wipe the excess along the grain rather than across it. For deeper gouges, level the damage with a wax fill stick, blend the color with a matching marker, and buff with a soft cloth.
Table lamp or floor lamp: which does your room need?
Buy a table lamp when you already have a surface for it and want light at seated eye level. A pair of table lamps on end tables on either side of a sofa is the most reliable living-room lighting arrangement. The constraint is that it needs a table, and that table needs an outlet within cord reach.
