What size TV should I buy?

Work backward from your seating distance. At about six feet, a 50-inch to 55-inch screen feels right; at nine feet, 65 to 75 inches; at twelve feet or more, 80 inches and up. Measure the wall as well, because a mount adds almost nothing to the width but a stand needs a console wider than the TV's feet.

Should I buy OLED, QLED or a standard LED TV?

Start with the room, not the technology. In a room you can darken, OLED gives the best contrast because every pixel makes its own light and can switch off completely, so black is actually black. In a bright, window-heavy room, a QLED holds color and beats glare because it runs far brighter. A standard LED set is the value pick and still the right answer for a bedroom, a guest room or a second TV, where the picture difference is not worth the money. Will a soundbar work with any TV?

Almost always, yes. Nearly every TV sold in the last several years has either an HDMI port marked ARC or eARC, or an optical audio output, and a soundbar connects through one of those with a single cable. HDMI eARC is the one to use where you have it, because it carries the higher-bandwidth formats such as Dolby Atmos and lets the TV remote control the bar's volume. Brand matching is not required: a Samsung bar works with an LG TV. Where brand matching helps is the extras, since some makers add wireless pairing or a shared app when the TV and bar come from the same brand.

Is 8K worth it right now?

Only in specific cases. There is very little native 8K content, so most of what you watch is upscaled. It makes sense if you are buying a very large screen and sitting close to it, and you want the most advanced panel available. Otherwise a good 4K set is the better value.

Can I put a regular TV on my patio?

No, not safely. Indoor TVs are not sealed against rain, humidity or dust, they are rarely bright enough to fight direct sun, and outdoor exposure usually voids the warranty. Use a purpose-built outdoor TV instead.

Does a smart TV need Wi-Fi to work?

No. A smart TV displays cable, antenna and anything plugged into HDMI without ever connecting. Wi-Fi only enables the streaming apps, voice control, casting and software updates.

What do I need to wall mount a TV?

Three things: a mount rated for your TV's size and weight, the right VESA pattern, and something solid to screw into. VESA is the spacing of the four threaded holes on the back of the panel, measured in millimeters, and the mount has to match it. Into wood studs a standard wall mount is straightforward; into metal studs, concrete or tile you need the correct anchors for that material. Decide first whether you want a fixed, tilting or full-motion arm, because that changes how far the panel sits off the wall.

Should I wall mount my TV or put it on a stand?

Mount it if you want the screen at the right height, a clean look and the floor space back, and you are confident about what is behind the drywall. Use a TV stand if you rent, if you want to hide components and cables without cutting into the wall, or if you are likely to move the TV. One thing people get wrong when mounting: the center of the screen should sit near eye level from where you actually sit, which is usually lower than it looks on the wall.

1. Measure the wall, then the seating distance

Measure the width of the wall or the media console first, and leave a few inches of breathing room on each side. Then measure how far your seat is from that wall. A rough rule for 4K: sit about one and a half times the screen's diagonal away. Nine feet of distance comfortably supports a 65-inch to 75-inch set.

2. Match the panel to the room's light

This matters more in Florida than almost anywhere else. A room with big windows and afternoon sun needs brightness, which points you toward LED and QLED sets. A dedicated media room with controlled light is where OLED pulls ahead, because nothing else produces black that looks like the screen is switched off.

3. Decide which features you will actually use

Nearly every TV sold today is a 4K smart TV, so the real differences are refresh rate, HDR format support and gaming inputs. If you game on a current console, look for 120Hz, variable refresh rate and HDMI 2.1. If you mostly stream movies and sports, put your money into picture quality and sound instead.

4. Budget for sound and mounting, not just the screen

A thin TV cannot hold a good speaker, so plan on a soundbar from the start rather than as an afterthought. Add a mount or a stand to the same order, confirm the VESA hole pattern, and if you are drilling into concrete block, say so when you arrange installation.

Should you shop by screen size or by picture type first?

Shop by size first. The wall and the seating distance are already fixed, and they set a hard ceiling on what you can buy, so working through TVs by size narrows the field before you spend any energy on panel arguments. Measure the wall, measure back to where you actually sit, then pick the band that fits. At around nine feet that puts most households in the 60 to 69-inch class.

Then choose the panel. With the size settled, move to TVs by type and let the room's light decide it: heavy window light points to LED and QLED, a room you can darken points to OLED. There is one case for reversing the order. OLED is only manufactured in a narrow band of sizes, so if you have your heart set on it, the technology limits the size rather than the other way around.

Do you need a soundbar with a new TV, or will the built-in speakers do?

Buy the bar with the TV if you watch dialogue-heavy drama, sports, or anything with real bass, which covers most people. A flat panel has no cabinet volume, so its speakers fire downward or backward off the wall and dialogue is the first thing to suffer. A soundbar with a separate subwoofer is the upgrade buyers notice most, and it costs far less than stepping up a panel tier.

Skip it if the set is going in a bedroom or a kitchen where you watch quietly, or if you already run a receiver and speakers. The trade-off is placement, not sound: a bar needs clear shelf space in front of the screen or a second bracket below it, so check its width against the TV stand you plan to use before you order.
