What size cooktop do I need?

1. Start with the cutout, not the cooktop

Cooktops drop into a hole cut in the countertop, and that hole is the constraint. Measure the width and depth of the existing opening, then check the specification sheet for the model you want, since the cutout dimensions and the overall glass size are different numbers. Also measure the cabinet below: a downdraft unit or a deep gas burner box can collide with a drawer.

2. Pick your fuel and heating type

Induction is the fastest and most precise, keeps the surface cool around the pan, and wipes clean, but it only works with magnetic cookware. Radiant electric puts heating elements under a smooth glass top for a lower price and no cookware restrictions. Count how many pans you actually run at once. Four burners suit most households; a five-burner 36-inch layout helps if you cook multiple dishes or use a large stock pot. Look for one high-output burner for boiling and searing, and one low simmer burner if you make sauces.

4. Decide whether you also need a wall oven

Going with a cooktop means buying an oven separately, and that is the whole point for a lot of remodels: the oven goes into a cabinet at a comfortable height, and the cooktop goes on the island or the run of counter you use most.
