Comments about COMCAST XFINITY Internet Prepaid Starter Kit:
I feel I have to comment not only about the product, but also about the service for which it is used.
The device itself is a fairly standard cable modem, used for Comcast's Xfinity Prepaid Internet service. The device seems to be well-constructed, and worked well out of the box. All required cables were provided, and the enclosed instructions were easy to follow. I was up and running in a half hour. Of course, my home was already prewired for cable. If yours is not, your experience may vary.
As for the service...so far I'm pretty happy with it, and given my history of enmity with this ISP, that's saying something. Advertised speed is 3Mbps, but I find between 4 and 5 to be more typical. Compared to my old ISP, I am getting roughly 3-4 times the speed, for $10 less per month. I can stream video, even high quality video, with no problems, although it's still a little slow for true 1080 hi-def. And I did it all without a contract, without an invasive credit check, and without a bunch of other services that I neither need nor want. All in all it seems a decent trade-off. I wouldn't object to paying a little more for high enough bandwidth to stream HD, mind you, but overall, I'm happy.
