Comments about Whirlpool 30" Convertible Range Hood:

I purchased this unit 14 months ago for a rental home. It lasted 14 months. I replaced it with another which failed within three days. I put in a third of the same unit and am hoping that the third is a charm.

Comments about Whirlpool 30" Convertible Range Hood:

I decided to purchase a range hood to replace my existing one after I discovered purchasing and installing an Over the range Microwave would be too much trouble due to having to install a power outlet above my stove.

I didn't want anything fancy or expensive just a simple range hood to replace my existing one that was inexpensive and easy to install. I saw many range hoods ranging from 80 bucks to 500. I decided on this one since it was relatively inexpensive and just had the basic functions of my old one.

Getting the range hood out the box was easy, but the instructions to install could have been much more clearer. Because this is a convertible hood, the instructions had to be separated in sections depending on what your use was going to be, however the manual did not do a good job in separating the instructions, instead I had to skim through the manual to find instructions to use the non vented version.

Once finding the section in the manual that I needed, I discovered that the included screws were too short to hold the hood up, because of the way my cabinets were made. Luckily I was able to use the screws from my old range hood instead. I had to drill additional holes in the bottom of my cabinet to match up with the holes on the range hood and once the holes were in I was able to mount the hood with no problem and then connect the wiring.

Overall install was fairly easy, it took about 2 hours and about 90 minutes of that time was reading the manual and verifying I had all the parts I needed and searching for my power drill. The only help I needed was having my wife hold the range hood in place while I marked were I needed to drill the holes. Once the holes were in, I was able to complete the job by myself in about 30 minutes which included going back and forth between the breaker box on and off and verifying the light and fan worked. If you are simply replacing an existing hood and don't need to vent it to the outside, then install should be fairly simple. The variable speed fan seems sufficient and I also like how you can select brightness levels for the light.

One thing I did not like was that it didn't come with a carbon filter, only an aluminum one. However, I ordered 3 from the company for a fair price and they arrived yesterday. I would have been willing to pay more if it included a carbon filter though. Another thing I don't like is that the unnecessary use of specialized screws requiring an Allen wrench adapter making changing out the filter more difficult than necessary especially since you are working upside down. A regular Philips head screw would have made much more sense. There are also the specialized screws for the paneling for the wiring. The use of the special screws require you to have to keep up with another part if you need to change out something. To avoid this I may just replace the screws with standard screws to avoid headaches and frustration in the future.

All in all a good range if you don't care about bells and whistles; the price is good and installation is fairly simple.
