Product Overview↑ Back to Top

Sony
The orange Cyber-shot DSCTX30RG Digital Camera from Sony is a "tough" point-and-shoot camera with an 18.2MP CMOS sensor, 5x optical zoom lens and the capability to be waterproof to 33' (10 m), shock-proof to a drop of 5' (1.5 m), freeze-proof to 14F (-10C) and dust-proof. The 18.2MP Exmor R CMOS sensor in combination with the camera's BIONZ image processor captures low-noise, high definition photos and Full HD 1080i videos with fast performance speeds, including continuous shooting of up to 10 frames per second at full resolution.

A Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar 5x optical zoom lens provides sharp imaging and the equivalent focal range of 26-130mm, effective for wide-angle to telephoto shooting. Optical SteadyShot image stabilization offers compensation against camera shake which results in images with less blur when shooting in low-light situations and at longer focal lengths. The 2-way Active Mode provides image stabilization in video mode so videos shot while moving will have smoother results. The Magnifying Glass Plus feature offers a 2x macro lens function for detailed close-ups as near as 1/3" (1 cm) and an integrated LED shines the light needed to illuminate those intricate close-up subjects.

A 3.3" 1229k-dot OLED touch screen monitor provides clear playback of images and its 5-level brightness adjustment means you'll have no problem seeing the screen when composing your shot. Touch screen navigation is intuitive and responds quickly. The Sweep Panorama 360 feature makes taking panorama shots simple. With one touch of the shutter button simply pan across your scene, up to 360, and the camera stitches your image together into one high resolution panoramic shot. Enhanced Superior Auto enables the camera to adjust itself for the optimal shot and Picture and Beauty Effects let you touch-up images after you have shot them with creative special effects.

It will open up by itself in the water.

Comments about Sony 18.2 MP Waterproof Digital Camera:

The open mechanizm makes playing with it on the beach difficult. Once the sand get into the mechanizm it is hard to get them all out. The waterproof seal is not well design it may open up in the water.

Good for about 20 months

By camerafan100

Comments about Sony 18.2 MP Waterproof Digital Camera:

I used to love this camera. Took awesome pictures, was easy to use and the touchscreen was great. When we took it in the pool it worked great....surpassed my expectations. However - 20 months down the road I took it in the pool and apparently it leaked. All of a sudden the lens got cloudy, and you could see it in the lens. Eventually this cleared up, but every time I turn it on now, it resets like its turned on for the first time....asks me to enter the date/time etc. Also, the eye-fi no longer works, the auto shut off doesn't work, and the battery indicator no longer works. I tried to do a factory reset, but nothing seems to help. Worst of all, it seems to eat up batteries.....almost shorts them out.

Love this camera

Comments about Sony 18.2 MP Waterproof Digital Camera:

I'm actually shocked to see all the negative comments about this camera. I bought mine in 2010 because I was moving to Hawaii for a year and the waterproof feature really appealed to me. I soon fell in love with this camera. Clear photos. Vibrant colors. On hikes and excursions my friends always dubbed me the photographer because everyone loved the quality of my photos. After reading these reviews I do have 1 thing in common with them however- the lever which closes the battery opening did break on mine (although after 4 years of use- and I really used this camera... dropped in mud, dropped out vehicles, dug in the sand... it was VERY used). I took a reunion trip back to the islands and although I tried my best not to get the camera in water (I knew the battery area would not seal properly) i failed- and this camera has quit on me. But- it did last me FIVE years. FIVE years of amazing photos. I don't regret this purchase one bit. I have a Canon DSLR which I love for professional looking photos- however for a kayak trip, hiking trip, where you want something light and to throw in your pocket- THIS IS YOUR CAMERA! I love it. I'm saving up to replace mine that just broke. Love love love.

Great Compact Camera

By Sonyfan0719

Comments about Sony 18.2 MP Waterproof Digital Camera:

I bought this camera about a year ago because I was traveling to Jamaica and I wanted a waterproof camera. During my trip I went on 2 1+ hour dives of about 40 feet of saltwater and the camera work flawlessly (camera is rated at 30-35ft of freshwater). I made sure to get it is fresh water as soon as possible to get as much salt off. To this day still works great. The images are very crisp and vibrant and underwater photos came out great. One small issue occurred after the second dive the lens had some moisture, but after a day of drying it went away and haven't seen moisture in the lens since. Camera will easily out perform any smartphone camera and definitely worth the money in my opinion to have it is a dedicated point and shoot.

Disappointed

By Charbycat

from Knowlton, QC J0E 1V0, Canada

Comments about Sony 18.2 MP Waterproof Digital Camera:

This is the most expensive camera I have ever had. Was so sold on the great salesmanship of the store. No worries for at least 4 years we were told. Guess what ? In a year and a half my camera has broken clips which hold the battery door closed . I am very cautious with my cameras. It was never dropped or misused. Though the service centre certainly put all the blame on us. The camera has been sent back on the extended guarantee - paid $ 70.00 - with little hope of a repair or replacement. The cost of the camera, new camera bag, 2 batteries, and several micro memory cards, we are very discouraged with both the product and the Future Shop extended warranty.

"Shockproof" - not so much!

By EStanley

from Colorado, USA

Comments about Sony 18.2 MP Waterproof Digital Camera:

This is the second time I have purchased this camera, and each time I have ended up being disappointed. The camera itself takes excellent photos and video, however it is not as durable and "shockproof" as advertised. The body of my first camera cracked during a long hike. It was in a protective case during that time. Now, the screen of my current camera has cracked. Also, while being kept in a protective case. Obviously, in both cases the cameras are no longer waterproof.
