Comments about Frigidaire 18.3 CuFt Top Freezer Refrigerator:
Excellent and elegant Gallery-line fridge for a couple or otherwise small family. Energy efficiency, very reasonable pricing and looks were the deciding factors for us.
Due to the constant smudging/high maintenance particular to stainless steel finishes, we had never considered, not even in our wildest dreams, of buying a fridge with this finish. The beautiful smudge-proof finish/coating on this Frigidaire Gallery unit (front side only, sides are a nice matching gray) changed our perception totally as we tested the store display unit to make sure it held up to claim as well as seeing the notable difference when compared to conventional stainless steel smudge-prone models nearby. Granted, the door pulls/handles can get a little smudgy with use, but no big deal since they clean easily with a damp towel.
As far as operating noises, since you can't appreciate this at the store and you rely on other reviews, we were initially skeptical since reviewers on different sites gave it thumbs-down on the noise level category. Not here. We think they must have gotten a defective unit (possibly one made on a Monday or Friday that lacked QC (:)--<--< ). Granted, it does 'run' longer than your typical non-energy efficient model, as we found out, due to the fact that maintaining the temp. stable wastes less energy than the regular stop/start, stop/start cycles. But having said that, by no means is it loud. Perhaps at worst, the first night or two it will sound like "snap, crackle & pop" were staying overnight visiting but this is only until it completely adjusts to its new environment, a/k/a your kitchen. The manual covers these sounds which in our case were slightly different from our older non-energy efficient fridge. Even remember a reviewer stating that the fridge was so loud that it even bothered the dog. But again, on this noise aspect we have no complaints and are glad we gave it a 'fighting chance' and the benefit of the doubt to disprove the noise worries.
Cooling-wise, it's so far a five-star unit, simple and straightforward control, haven't had to adjust the temp from the original factory (mid-way) position.
Doors are good and seal/shut securely on their own when the unit is given the specified leveling incline towards the back (i.e. front adjustable legs slightly higher than non-adjustable rears).
Finally, the down side? The interior. Though elegant, pretty roomy and useful, we wish the interior plastics had the sturdiness of yesteryear (I know, wishful thinking, right?). Both the shelves as well as the interior surface lining and relatively thin glass leave a bit to be desired as far as interior sturdiness/integrity on the long-run, thus a star was taken away. Too much weight on either of the top two 'sliding spillsafe' shelves buckles them a bit. These interior issues have not been a deterrent for us since the other qualities it possesses clearly outweigh this one, plus it's only two adults here using it. But, for heavy-duty or large family use, the interior 'newness' -if you will- may not hold up as long. We've seen some other Frigidaire units on display whose interior surface panels/plastics have started to yellow-out for some reason even on the showroom floor, but we are hesitantly hopeful this will take long to develop. Problem is that when you compare the material quality used on the inside of today's units to that 10+ year-old fridge you're replacing, you tend to be kind of biased on this aspect due to the material strength/thickness used back then. Anyhow, only time, aging and use (not meant for abuse) will tell if this proves to be an issue.
Hope all of this helps you decide.
